NFL Superbowl XLIII and Larry Fitzgerald’s Eyes

Well, I happen to be in Tampa right now, and the talk is about Arizona Cardinal’s wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald’s hands. However, what is even more remarkable is his eyes, yes his eyes! That is if you know that he actually closes his eyes when catching the ball. Plucking the ball out of thin air with a 200 plus pound linebacker or cornerback speeding at you is no small feat, but Larry Fitzgerald may have an edge because of one little know training when he was a kid.

His grandfather, Robert Johnson, a Chicago optometrist, trained his vision using hand-eye drills to improve his precision, control, spatial judgment and rhythm. What was intended to help him in school at that time, morphed into an advantage later in his football career. He has what Joan Vickers, a cognitive psychologist at the University of Calgary termed “the quiet eye,” In a nutshell, Larry Fitzgerald has “predictive control,” and one thing for sure is that the passes to him will be caught, which in my mind is a thing of beauty.
